Canada’s iGaming market has grown significantly, with Ontario leading the charge by launching its regulated online casino market in April 2022. Ontario’s market has quickly become one of North America’s largest, with 87 online casinos and over 1.9 million registered players. The province’s online casinos contributed to a significant portion of its overall gambling revenue, reaching CA$311 million in July 2025, 81% of which came from online casinos.
Other provinces, such as British Columbia and Alberta, also offer regulated iGaming, though their models are more centralized. British Columbia operates through PlayNow, while Alberta runs PlayAlberta. However, Alberta has taken steps toward liberalizing its market with the introduction of Bill 48, which will allow private operators to apply for licenses and offer online casino games similar to Ontario’s framework. Alberta is building on lessons from Ontario’s initial rollout to ensure a stronger and more efficient market.
Other provinces, including Manitoba, Québec, Saskatchewan, and the Atlantic Provinces, offer regulated platforms like PlayNow.com and Espacejeux.com. Although Ontario remains the largest market, other provinces are considering or already enacting changes to open up their markets and offer more options to players while reducing offshore gambling.
The shift towards a more liberalized iGaming market across Canada seems inevitable, with legislative efforts gaining momentum. While Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut currently lack provincial iGaming platforms, the trend is clearly moving towards more widespread and regulated online casinos in the near future.
